Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations Organisation, in which every participant represents a delegation allotted to him/her in a committee where delegates debate on a given agenda. In a Model United Nations, agendas are resolved by adapting of resolutions, which are voted upon for ratification.
Q2. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN A MODEL UNITED NATIONS?
Usually, students from the middle and high school levels, as well as students from colleges/universities, take part in a Model United Nations, with most of the conferences hosted for only one of these levels. When it comes to NEIMUN, any student currently in their higher secondary (Class 11 & 12), undergraduate, postgraduate, or any young professional can participate in the conference. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policy will be implemented in selecting the young leaders from all the states of North East India.
Q3. ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC RULES OF PROCEDURES THAT ARE TO BE FOLLOWED DURING A MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE?
Yes, every Model United Nations has a different set of rules that they follow during the conference. Since there is no governing body that regulates all the Model United Nations Conferences, every conference may differ from another when it comes to rules of procedure. NEIMUN follows the rules of procedures adapted from the Global Model United Nations Conference and are similar to the rules of procedures of the United Nations General Assembly. These rules are intended to comply with the UN4MUN initiative by the United Nations Department of Public Information.
Q4. WHAT DOES A MODEL UNITED NATIONS DELEGATE DO?
A Model United Nations delegate represents the country/organisation they have been allotted and debates on the given agenda(s) from the perspective of the delegation. Every delegate is expected to follow their country policy strictly while putting forward their arguments, and contribute actively in addressing the issue at hand.
Q5. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TAKING PART IN A MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE?
A Model United Nations Conference improves the debating and oratory skills of every delegate. Such a conference involves, and with experience, enhances research, public speaking, and critical thinking as well as leadership abilities, in addition to improving writing and drafting skills. It not helps in learning about diplomacy and international relations and politics, but it also helps in motivating oneself and becoming more confident.
Q6. IS THERE ANY SPECIFIC CODE OF CONDUCT IN A MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE?
Yes, there are a few rules laid down by the conference staff members which all participants must follow. These rules relate to the usage of specific electronic gadgets during the conference, allowed materials in the conference venue, behaviour of a participant, conference dress code, etc. which all the participants are obliged to follow.

A delegate is expected to present them self as someone who has a grasp on the given agenda, put forwards arguments strongly and precisely, yet is open to negotiations. They should be broad minded, friendly and welcome any talk which might help serve the purpose for which the committee was convened. At the same time, this must be ensured that only to come across as appealing to the other delegates, one must not forget their country policy and must take a firm stand even against cases which they shouldn’t otherwise.
